Comparison of immunoperoxidase and immunofluorescence assays for pp65 cytomegalovirus antigen in immunocompromised patients BJID
Debur,Maria do Carmo; Vidal,Luine R. Rosele; Nogueira,Meri Bordignon; Pereira,Luciane Aparecida; Takahashi,Gislene R.A.; Rotta,Indianara; Almeida,Sérgio Monteiro de; Raboni,Sonia Mara.
We compared the pp65 antigen detection by an in house method (immunoperoxidase assay) and by a commercial kit (immunofluorescence assay) available for cytomegalovirus infection diagnosis in immunocompromised patients. Sixty-four blood samples were analyzed in duplicate for both techniques. Eight-six percent of the samples had concordant qualitative results. The discordant results occurred more frequently in samples with low quantity of positive cells. There were no significant differences with qualitative and quantitative results of the methods.

Human immunodeficiency virus and hepatitis C virus/hepatitis B virus co-infection in Southern Brazil: clinical and epidemiological evaluation BJID
Raboni,Sonia Mara; Tuon,Felipe Francisco; Beloto,Nayara Carvalho Polido; Demeneck,Henrique; Oliveira,Andre; Largura,Denis; Sagrado,Andressa Gervasoni; Lima,Bárbara Perdonsini; Franzoni,João Paulo; Pedroso,Maria Lucia.
Hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus and human immunodeficiency virus share a similar transmission pathway and are often diagnosed in the same patient. These patients tend to have a faster progression of hepatic fibrosis. This cross-sectional study describes the demographic features and clinical profile of human immunodeficiency virus/hepatitis co-infected patients in Parana, Southern Brazil. A total of 93 human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients attending a tertiary care academic hospital in Southern Brazil were included. Clinical, demographic and epidemiological data were evaluated. Hepatitis B virus and/or hepatitis C virus positive serology was found in 6.6% of patients. The anti-hepatitis C virus serum test was positive in 85% (79/93) of...

Interferon-gamma release assay versus tuberculin skin test for latent tuberculosis infection among HIV patients in Brazil BJID
Kussen,Gislene Maria Botão; Dalla-Costa,Libera Maria; Rossoni,Andrea; Raboni,Sonia Mara.
Abstract Setting Patients HIV+ attending in a reference clinic, Southern Brazil. Objective To compare the interferon-gamma-release assay (IGRA – QuantiFERON® TB Gold In-Tube) with the tuberculin skin test (TST – PPD-Rt 23) for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in patients with HIV. Design Cohort study. Patients were simultaneously submitted to the TST and blood collection for the IGRA. Results A total of 140 subjects were included. Nine (6.4%) were IGRA+/TST+, 12 (8.6%) were IGRA+/TST−, 4 (3%) were IGRA−/TST+, and 115 (82%) IGRA−/TST−. There was poor agreement between tests (kappa = 0.2), and no correlation between these results and CD4+ T lymphocyte counts. During follow-up, one patient with negative results on both tests died from sepsis, and...

Laboratorial diagnosis of lymphocytic meningitis BJID
Almeida,Sérgio Monteiro de; Nogueira,Meri Bordignon; Raboni,Sonia Mara; Vidal,Luine Rosele.
Meningitis is the main infectious central nervous system (CNS) syndrome. Viruses or bacteria can cause acute meningitis of infectious etiology. The term "Aseptic Meningitis" denotes a clinical syndrome with a predominance of lymphocytes in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), with no common bacterial agents identified in the CSF. Viral meningitis is considered the main cause of lymphocyte meningitis. There are other etiologies of an infectious nature. CSF examination is essential to establish the diagnosis and to identify the etiological agent of lymphocytic meningitis. We examined CSF characteristics and the differential diagnosis of the main types of meningitis.

Rotavirus infection in a tertiary hospital: laboratory diagnosis and impact of immunization on pediatric hospitalization BJID
Pereira,Luciane Aparecida; Raboni,Sonia Mara; Nogueira,Meri B; Vidal,Luine R; Almeida,Sergio Monteiro de; Debur,Maria C; Cruz,Cristina.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Rotavirus (RV) is the main etiological agent of diarrhea in childhood; its laboratory diagnosis is crucial to guide the clinical management and prevention of its spread. RV immunization was introduced in Brazilian 6-month-old children in 2006. The present study was aimed to evaluate three methodologies used for human RV detection in stool samples obtained from patients hospitalized due to gastroenteritis in a teaching hospital and report the impact of RV immunization in hospitalization by diarrhea. METHODS: 293 stool samples collected in the 2001-2008 period were analyzed by enzyme immunoassay (EIA), latex agglutination (LA) and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). RESULTS: Rotavirus was detected in 34.8% of samples by LA...

Viral acute gastroenteritis: clinical and epidemiological features of co-infected patients BJID
Ferreira,Carla Elizabeth de Oliveira; Raboni,Sonia Mara; Pereira,Luciane Aparecida; Nogueira,Meri Bordignon; Vidal,Luine Rosele Renaud; Almeida,Sérgio Monteiro.
BACKGROUND: Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) is a common disorder that affects children worldwide. It is usually caused by viral agents, including rotavirus, enteric adenovirus, norovirus, and astrovirus groups. Currently, there are few reports about co-infection among these viruses, mainly in Brazil. METHODS: This is a retrospective study in which 84 rotavirus-positive samples from hospitalized patients at a teaching hospital in Southern Brazil, collected in the 2001-2010 period, were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and reverse transcription - polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), for the investigation of enteric adenovirus, astrovirus, and norovirus. RESULTS: In total, 12 of the 84 (14%) samples were positive to enteric adenovirus or norovirus....
